Ajanta Caves is one of the many U.N.E.S.C.O. World Heritage sites in India & the 2nd World Heritage site in Aurangabad after Ellora Caves. These beautiful rock cut caves were built in the 200BCE. and remained Hidden till the British Colonial Era.
It was only until a few 100 years ago that these caves were rediscovered by a British East India Company Officer who was out hunting in the forest.

Ajanta caves are located near Fardapur village in Aurangabad district. Tough the caves are 100km away from the city, Aurangabads remains the major city for all Tourist visiting Ajanta Caves.
Most tourist visitig Ajanta Caves travel to Aurangabad either by bus/train or Air.
Aurangabad as a city is very well connected to Major cities like Pune, Mumbai, Indore etc. and overnight trains and buses are available throught the day. Aurangabad is also very well connected to all these cities and can be reached withing 4-6 hours by drive.
The caves are situated 101 km in northern direction from Aurangabad and 6.5 km from Fardapur, a small village. It is only 55 km from Jalgaon, a junction on Central railways. Ajanta is conveniently approached by motarable road from Aurangabad and Jalgaon. But many tourists prefer to come via Aurangabad because it is a base for other world Heritage sites Ellora. The caves are excavated in Ajanta range of mountain. These are ranges of Sahayadri which gifts number of famous rock cut temples to Indian architecture. The caves are always located in scenic cavated in the semicircular scarp of a steep rock, which is 78 m high. The caves face a narrow sinuous gorge, through which river Waghora flows.
What is the best time to visit Ajanta Caves?
Ajanta Caves are open throughout the year except on all Mondays. However the best time to visit Ajanta Caves is between August - January. Monsoons and Winters are the best season in this part of India.
